There is no cost to you and you’re paid on performance. However, today one has to be careful. There are plenty of scammers and con artists out there that are more than happy to take you money and hard work off of you. Unfortunately, affiliate marketing is not immune to these scammers. Daily, people are taken in by promises of big money with relatively little effort. In this article we will teach you some of the signs to look for and tell you how to spot a scam.

When you join an affiliate marketing scheme, you either going to sell a product or a service. With products, you usually have a choice and range to sell. How you decide to do this is largely up to you. You could also sell a service. Web page designs as well as increasing sales and internet traffic are all examples of services offered by affiliate marketing programs.

How many times have you seen as ad on the internet promising huge earnings? Things like “Earn 1000$ a day” or Join our program now and become a millionaire. If your look closely at these ads they are not actually selling anything. Any company that is just selling the opportunity to make money is likely a scam. True, some affiliate marketing companies will have attention grabbing headlines like the ones mentioned above. However, if you go on to read the ad and information, there will likely be a detailed description of what they company sells. They will also have a disclaimer and terms and conditions listed.

These companies that offer, the opportunity to make money are likely pyramid schemes. The only people paying money in are the ones actually joining. There is no income being created, just money being passed from person to person. Not only are these scams and you’ll loose what you invested, they are also illegal and you can face prosecution.

Another thing to watch out for is no free participation. If you have to pay to join then you may have stumbled upon a scam or what is known as a multilevel marketing program. Multi-level marketing programs are completely legal and some people make good livings out of them. However, if you’re not successful you may end up purchasing a bunch of products that you cannot sell.

True affiliate programs are free. That is part of their attraction. There are no costs to you and they should also be risk free. Any Affiliate marketing programs that demands your money is not an affiliate program. You should ask yourself why they are misrepresenting themselves this way if they are legitimate.

Many of us dream of being our own bosses. We would love to be able to take control of our lives and careers. The attraction of answering only to you combined with setting your own working hours and committing what your choose bring loads of people into the affiliate marketing schemes. Affilaite marketing can be an excellent way for a highly motivated, creative person to make an excellent living. There are some wonderful programs out there just waiting to be joined. However, for every great program there is likely one that is fraudulent. Con artists operate in many areas and unfortunate affiliate marketing is not immune.

Before joining, check to see what the company is selling. If they are not selling goods or services then they are likely an illegal pyramid scheme. If they require your own money to get started then they are what are known as a multi level marketing program. Affiliate marketing can be a great opportunity but you need to do your homework.

Low vs. High Visibility Marketing Character

With all the buzz about self-branding, viral marketing and social networking, it can seem like being highly visible is the way to go, no matter what you may prefer. That’s where a hard look at your core competence and goals will help you decide if you want to follow the pack or keep a low profile in the IM marketplace. There are advantages and disadvantages to both approaches, depending on your personal style and preferred method of working.

Folks who are solitary by nature, don’t need a great deal of social interaction and prefer staying out of the limelight can use “low visibility” to their advantage. By being hard to get and booked in advance, you will create a perception of your value that will keep you in as much work as you desire. Getting started may take time and effort beyond that of someone else who has a much higher profile. As long as the quality and value of your work is high, you’ll get more loyal customers that won’t stray. You’ll be the big fish in a small pond. Making the move into other areas of the IM marketplace can be easier if you are not highly identified with one, particular niche, too.

Social butterflies, who thrive on interacting with others, will get more out of being “high profile” businesses. Aside from the emotional satisfaction of connecting with a large body of customers and contacts, the potential for large returns is often easier to achieve with broad exposure. Becoming widely known and highly visible will help jumpstart a new business into profitability much sooner than the quiet approach. The problem with such a method of marketing is becoming “typecast” or pigeonholed into a particular niche that may become less profitable in time.

The decision to go with either approach begins with a serious look at yourself. In some cases, it will be easy to see which type you are by nature. For many, it will take some reflection and a willingness to ask for help. Self knowledge can be the toughest knowledge to acquire. If you’re stuck, ask friends or acquaintances to volunteer their opinion about you. Don’t be put off if what they tell you doesn’t fit in with your expectations. Planning to be high profile, when you’re really better suited to flying under the radar, will lead to long term dissatisfaction and stress. Trying to be a “best kept secret”, when you are a social animal, will stifle your growth and starve you, emotionally.

A very few people are destined to be very high profile: the biggest fish in the biggest pond. They have a constellation of personal characteristics that make them ideally suited to being leaders. Generally, they know it, too. These natural born leaders balance the need to build a successful business with being a part of the larger, social environment of their marketplace. These so-called “gurus” don’t just make a name for themselves. They have a vision or dream that they build every day, in a way that is meant to turn a profit and make the world a better place.

No matter what your calling in life may be, make sure you remain true to who you are, inside. Take the time to find out what your real needs are and make your business an extension of your inner self. There’s nothing tougher than playing a role you don’t believe in. There’s nothing better than creating a business model that lets you be the best you can be. Make sure your choice in marketing and “branding” is the best fit for your future.

Cut Out the Time Waste

101 FREE Ways To Get More Done With Less StressThe true measure of success may be how much time you spend doing exactly what you want. Never mind the money, if you already have enough. How much of your time is spent doing that which either aggravates you or wastes your time? Even the very rich can find themselves caught up in stressful situations that cry out for a solution. Most of the time, eliminating them altogether is the best strategy.

The problem is one of habits. If you’ve always done things a certain way, you may be creating a problem that can be solved by a change in thinking, followed by a change in acting. Are you checking your email more than 5 times a day? More than 50? Why? Consider checking email twice a day, at the most. If you warn people that you only check email twice a day, you may find that those who depend on you to respond immediately change how they behave towards you.

Another consideration is negative influences. You may have a majority of customers that are a pleasure to deal with, and a few that are nasty, negative and chew up most of your time. Consider firing the troublemakers. That will make room for more good customers and make sure your attitude isn’t negatively affected by dealing with people who delight in making you miserable.

Cut yourself off from the “news”. Television and newspapers seldom serve up news that is actionable by you. When was the last time a public official or government agency contacted you regarding your take on the latest news bulletin? For that matter, when was the last time you missed something important in life that you didn’t hear about from a friend or neighbor? If the world is about to blow up, I guarantee you’ll find out about it without resorting to the media. Eliminate daily news briefings. You don’t need the negative influence in your life.

Try outsourcing your chores. If you’ve automated your business so you can spend more time on yard work, housecleaning or maintenance, stop and think! How much will it cost you to pay someone to mop your floors, mow your lawn and clean your rain gutters? Unless you are a seasoned professional at such labor, you’ll probably get a better result than if you keep doing it yourself. Even if you are a seasoned professional at such labor, isn’t the reason you got into IM precisely to free yourself from daily drudgery?

Learn how to shut your mind tightly against negative thinking and the negative influence of other people. You can begin by practicing meditation, where you stop thinking about your thoughts and simply remain quiet, in your mind. With practice, you’ll find it’s easy and effortless to break a train of thought you do not wish to encourage. You’ll also find it beneficial to cut out all the people who want to dump their problems on you. You don’t have to be nasty or rude. Just stop allowing them to invade your life with the things that they, themselves, are unwilling to deal with. It is not your duty to hear other people whine about their life.

There are troubles and duties we all must deal with. I’m not suggesting you drop your responsibilities and slack off on what you know you must do. Just take the time to question all of your assumptions regarding duty and responsibility. Figure out how much of your life is spent doing things that you really don’t have to be doing. Get rid of all the old, bad habits that cause unnecessary aggravation and eliminate them from your life.

Site Content and Your Niche

Media ST Campaign ManagerIn the last issue we talked about passion, hobbies and what they have to do with niche marketing. In this issue we are going to go over making money from content rich sites.

Making money from a content rich niche marketing website can be very easy, very difficult or impossible. First let’s define and describe what a content rich niche market website is and how it works. You won’t find a list for ‘Niche Markets’ anywhere. There isn’t one.

A person will find niche marketers when he types words into his favorite search engine and hits search. Let’s say he types in ‘Improving my golf score’. He will get many hits that will provide links that take him to niche marketing sites. On these sites, he will be asked to enter his email address and opt-in to receiving a newsletter. Since he is in need of learning how to improve his golf score, he willingly does that.

On the content rich site he will find articles and other information about improving his golf score and advertisements for products and services designed to help him improve his golf score. In the future he will receive a newsletter, about every two weeks usually, and he will have become a niche market customer.

If you are the niche marketer, the opt-in email address supplied is pure gold because you will have a customer or a potential customer. When he buys the products and/or services that you are advertising on your site, you will make money. Having a content rich site enhances the possibility of sales.

The trick to making money from a content rich niche marketing website is to have a topic that helps people solve their problems, makes them feel better or look better, or supplies them with information that they need. You will need to have related products and services advertised on your site since that is where the income actually comes from.

The website content is what makes people visit your site again and again. The more content rich it is will determine how often they visit and how long they stay. The longer they stay the more opportunities you have to sell to them.

Niche Marketing Basics

In the last issue we talked about why niche marketing can be the greatest frontier for your small business. In this issue we are going to go over what you can do to make money from niches.

One reason that so many people want to work from their homes is that there in no need for a large financial investment to begin an online business. One doesn’t need to invest heavily in product development. Those who have expertise in almost anything can begin by simply writing an e-book and promoting it or obtaining a website and promoting products that are produced by others.

Think of the people who promote products that are produced by others as the modern version of the old door-to-door salesman except instead of knocking on one door at a time they knock on the doors of millions of people at the same time by way of the internet.

Another attractive reason that draws people to a work at home job or small business is the fact that they don’t need to incorporate, a sole-proprietorship does nicely. One person working from one computer these days can accomplish the same things that once required many people working many hours to accomplish. A sole-proprietorship business isn’t required to file separate tax returns or pay any special taxes on income that is earned in the way that a corporation, an LLC or even a partnership business is required to do. The taxes levied on a sole-proprietorship business are just for personal income.

The Internet isn’t called ‘The Information Super Highway’ for nothing. A person can make a very good living selling nothing but information on it. The populations of every industrialized nation in the world have learned that if you want to know anything about anything, you get on a computer and ask the question. They have also learned that you must pay for special information and they are more than willing to do just that.

A person who has special knowledge of a subject and could be considered a ‘guru’ has a market for selling that information on the Internet. All that needs to be done is to set up a website, publish the information, advertise and sell the information. It’s a wonderful concept and information is a wonderful commodity. There is no need to invest in an inventory and no shipping or handling costs involved to deliver the product. Everybody gets what they want. The seller gets paid for delivering information to a person who wants that information, everybody is happy.

There are so many advantages of working from home for the individual as well as for owners of large businesses that it is truly the way that ‘work’ will be done more and more in the future.

A Niche is just a Niche. Your Promotion is the Money Maker

The Original Bum MarketerSomeone that is relatively new to marketing will typically think that there are “secret” niches out there…ones that they have to find in order to build a big profitable campaign.

This is simply not the case. I can tell you it has less to do with what you promote and more to do with how you promote it.

For example, if someone was looking to buy a silver iPod shuffle and you direct them to a pink iPod Nano, you are not going to make a sale. Although relevant at first glance (both are iPods), they are not precise to what people are looking for. Was this the niche or the way it was promoted?

I typically suggest to members that they initially try promoting something they are interested in or are hobbyists of. The reason for this is that when you are interested in something, you are a consumer. You understand the audience because YOU ARE the audience…meaning that you will be able to build more relevant and targeted campaigns with half of the research (than if you were promoting something you were not interested in).

So, now that I have gotten this out of the way I am going to discuss how you find niches. Again, please remember that it is not the niche that makes you a profit, it is the way you promote it.

How to Find Niche Markets

If you were given nothing other than a car and a bit of gas, how would you go about finding a niche?

I hate it when people say you need some sort of special software or some special knowledge to find a niche when really it does not take much. You can find niches every where you look, online and offline.

I will tell you exactly what I would do if I had a car and some gas to find niches…

I would head to the mall. I would check out some stores…what are the hottest new games people are buying, what sort of clothes are hot, what is selling in the department stores…you could even take it a step further and ask the people at the stores what their hottest sellers are (who knows the business better than the people that buy it), and ask them why it is selling the best!

Then I would hit up the magazine stand. You can get a ton of ideas by simply browsing the sections of magazines. Off road trucking, scrapbooking, stock trader investment strategies, solar building…etc.

You could even browse through a magazine and record some ideas. I did this once as an example and I showed people how I found 25 niches in under 10 minutes just by looking through a womens health magazine (women are a huge purchasing power if you didn’t know that already!!).

So that is what I would do if I didn’t have the Internet…and is what I have done in the past.

How to Find Niche Keywords

We are constantly in contact with members at WA through our Forum, and one question that always comes up is “How do I find Niche Keywords?”. The usual definition for a “niche keyword” is a search term that receives high volume traffic, is very targeted to the product/service you are promoting, but does not have many advertisers promoting it.

Pretty rare indeed?

How about a revised definition…the one I stand by and follow:

“A niche keyword is one that contains 3+ terms and is directly relevant to the landing page and product that you are promoting.”

OK, let me walk you through this. This is NOT a niche keyword:

“diet review”

And this is a niche keyword:

“low carb diet reviews”

The problem with the first search term is that “diet review” could relate to any type of diet…and this is not what you want. These people are very early along in their research and likely do not have an idea what they want or should be looking for yet.

The second keyword however is much more targeted and will be more profitable. I know this just by looking at the term as it fits the criteria.

The people already know they are interested in a “low carb” type of diet…now they are looking to see which low carb diet they should go for. If you deliver this information, then you will have a winning campaign. Relevance converts!

This is just a simple example, but this sort of “niche keyword” marketing should be applied to any industry that you promote.

(1) Over 3 words in length
(2) Relevant to what you are promoting
(3) Relevant to your website

Keyword research is a highly profitable component within any successful Internet marketer’s repertoire. We have keywords that generate several thousands of dollars each month in revenue because they are marketed correctly. A niche keyword doesn’t convert, it is all about the marketing!

If you take anything from this, it is the understanding that it is not about the “niche”…it is about how you target that niche with your ‘marketing’. This may be a huge revelation for many (there is nothing wrong with that), but you can make a living with pretty much any niche online.

In other words, it is not about what (the product) you are promoting, it is about how well you understand who (the niche) you are promoting to.
